Active control of jet breakup and droplet formation using temperature modulation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Different regimes of temperature modulated breakup were studied using a slender jet model. The instability is induced through capillary and Marangoni stresses can be used to control droplet formation in terms intact length resultant drop size distribution, which otherwise irregular due the inevitable presence background noise. When thermal modulation weak, surface tension gradient forces act only as trigger curvature-gradient soon take over grow exponentially downstream inertio-capillary growth. strong, not trigger, but remain significant till breakup.

Electrospray cone-jet breakup and droplet production for electrolyte solutions

The production of charge droplets via the electrospray of an electrolyte is experimentally and theoretically found to be a Coulombic fission phenomenon that occurs when induced space charge at the microjet interface reaches a critical density as the charge separation approaches the Bjerrum length. The field surrounding the cone is dominated by the Taylor harmonic, which is responsible for induc...

Droplet collisions after liquid jet breakup in microgravity conditions

The droplet dynamics and collisions after a liquid jet breakup have been experimentally studied in low gravity conditions. An experimental setup was designed in order to be used at the I.N.T.A. Drop Tower, which allows for 2.1 seconds of microgravity. The dynamics of distilled water jets injected into a rectangular tank was recorded by means of a high-speed video camera. Observations of the dro...

Liquid jet breakup and subsequent droplet dynamics under normal gravity and in microgravity conditions

We present an experimental study on the characteristics of liquid jets in different configurations. We consider jets injected perpendicular to gravity, jets injected parallel to gravity, and jets injected in a microgravity environment. We study the role played by gravity in the jet breakup length and in the dynamics of the droplets generated after breakup. We analyze droplets obtained in the dr...

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Deformation and Breakup of a Droplet under Gravity Force Using Interparticle Potential Model

Abstract In this paper interparticle potential model of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is used to simulate deformation and breakup of a falling droplet under gravity force. First this model is applied to ensure that the surface tension effect is properly implemented in this model. Two tests have been considered. First, it has been checked an initial square drop in a 2D domain can freely def...

Temperature dependence of droplet breakup in 8CB and 5CB liquid crystals.

Droplet breakup of many Newtonian fluids is well described by current experiments, theory, and simulations. Breakup in complex fluids where interactions between mesoscopic structural features can affect the flows remains poorly understood and a burgeoning area of research. Here, we report on our investigations of droplet breakup in thermotropic liquid crystals. We investigate breakup in the sme...
